Reaching for the Trees: How Pioneer Springs Grows Student Learning from the Ground Up
For The Pioneer Springs Community School (PSCS), reaching for the trees isn’t a new-age twist on a familiar metaphor; it’s a lived philosophy. Students are encouraged to stay rooted in nature, grow upward, and spread their branches.
Pioneer Springs Community School is the only nature-based, holistic, tuition-free public charter school in the Charlotte, NC region. It is also among three recipients of Great Schools North Carolina’s inaugural School Quality Cohort Award, receiving a $150,000 grant through an 18-month school leader program that helps established charter schools identify and implement the key levers of change to improve student outcomes.
When Pioneer Springs opened as a public charter school in Fall 2014, it was intentionally small, with just two classrooms per grade level. In the decade since, the school has remained a tight-knit community, while growing to serve more than 500 K–12 students and proudly celebrating its first graduating class in Spring 2024.
At PSCS, learning comes naturally. Nestled on acres of sprawling greenery, the school believes Mother Nature is one of the best teachers and that education extends beyond classroom walls. The campus features wooded trails, trees to climb, a natural amphitheater, a pond, and nature-inspired play areas where students engage in imaginative, hands-on learning every day.
This year, their spirit of growth remains strong, and with the School Quality Cohort grant, PSCS is strengthening its academic framework and instructional systems.
Under the leadership of Elementary Program Principal Margaret Bonds and Upper School Program Principal Heidi Magi, the school has made significant strides. Both leaders have been developing systems and structures to effectively track and manage their Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) while raising the bar for classroom engagement and academic rigor.
Great Schools North Carolina is proud to see the fruits of their labor and love taking shape. We believe deeply in the potential of these leaders and their community as they, too, continue to reach for the trees.
